Конгрессмен Брэд Шерман спросил у Блинкена, готов ли он заверить законодательную ветвь власти Соединенных Штатах в том, что нынешнее правительство страны «до смягчения санкций» в отношении Ирана ожидает увидеть «поддающееся проверке соблюдение СВПД» со стороны Тегерана либо движение последнего «посредством переговоров к полному соблюдению» ядерной сделки. Госсекретарь подтвердил это.

В январе 2020 года Иран сообщил об отказе от договоренностей по СВПД. В начале мая 2018-го бывший президент США Дональд Трамп объявил об одностороннем выходе Вашингтона из сделки и возобновлении антииранских санкций.

Договор СВПД по Ирану был заключен летом 2015 года между Тегераном и шестью странами-посредниками. Позже Иран уличили в грубых нарушениях договоренностей.
